Agbaya

Hand lettering for Foreign Policy Magazine’s Decoder series. The story (by: Nosmot Gbadamosi) was on the clash between Nigeria’s booming youth population and its leadership.

“Agbaya” is a Yoruba word that means “bad elder”—or an older person who acts in a childish manner.

For the editorial, the lettering style was designed to suggest a face-off between the Nigerian youth and the bad Nigerian leaders who are known to exhibit childish(Agbaya) traits. A Nigerian flag was integrated into the piece to represent patriotic Nigerian youths, while a pacifier and a pistol were used to reflect the childish and dangerous nature of Nigerian leaders.
